The Mundane Adventures of Bob Bobbington

Bob Bobbington worked at TriSquare Solutions, a company so forgettable that even its own employees struggled to explain what it did. Officially, it “optimized synergistic workflows.” In practice, it sold office supplies—slowly. Bob’s job title—Associate Junior Assistant of Logistical Oversight—meant many things, none of them important. His primary responsibility involved tracking plastic forks in the breakroom, followed closely by attending an unreasonable number of meetings about those forks. Each morning, Bob arrived at Cubicle 17B—the one beneath an air vent that hummed like an exhausted refrigerator—armed with a dented lunchbox and the faint, recurring notion that life was meant to amount to something more than this. Bob Bobbington possessed a rare and inconvenient talent: despite his sincere efforts to remain perfectly average, he had an uncanny habit of drifting into situations that were, at best, mildly extraordinary. Today would be no exception. Not that Bob knew that yet.
