A global collapse begins in 2013 when the fungus Ophiocordyceps unilateralis mutates into a human-infecting plague that destroys civilization within days, leaving survivors under brutal control of FEDRA or scattered into violent factions. Over 20 years later, Joel Miller becomes a hardened smuggler who is tasked with escorting Ellie Williams, a girl immune to infection, across a ruined America. Their journey turns into a bond like father and daughter, ending when Joel saves Ellie from a Firefly operation that would have killed her for a potential cure, choosing her over humanity and lying about it. Years later in The Last of Us Part II, Joel’s past actions lead to his death at the hands of Abby Anderson, whose father was killed in that same Firefly hospital, pushing Ellie into a path of revenge across Seattle. There, she and her allies navigate a war-torn city split between the militarized WLF and the cult-like Seraphites, while hunting Abby’s group.
