Though trained, he is not immune to fear, especially as the scale of the invasion becomes clear. D-Day (June 6, 1944) marked the beginning of the Allied invasion of Western Europe. Thousands of American, British, and Canadian troops landed on heavily defended beaches under relentless machine-gun fire, artillery, and obstacles. German forces, including the 352nd Infantry Division, fought from bunkers and strongpoints, inflicting heavy losses, but were ultimately unable to stop the landings as Allied forces secured the beaches and began pushing inland.
