Nobody knows where it came from. The earliest accounts date back to a 2007 forum post on a now deleted horror board — a user describing something they saw standing at the end of their hallway at 3am. They described it as a dog at first. Then they looked closer and realized it was nothing like a dog at all. It had the shape of one — the four legs, the low hunched posture, the head tilted slightly sideways. But the skin was completely gone. Every muscle, every tendon, every glistening wet surface was completely exposed and wrong. And it was smiling. Not in the way animals smile. In the way that something smiles when it knows exactly what it is about to do to you. The user was never heard from again. Their last post simply read — "it's looking at my feet."
