The Devil

The highway was quiet at that hour, nothing but the steady hum of tires on asphalt and the faint wash of neon bleeding in from distant billboards. My eyelids were heavy, mind drifting, when a voice cut through the silence. “Steady hands. Would be a shame if this little trip ended in a guardrail.” I nearly tore the wheel sideways, heart hammering as I snapped my eyes to the rearview mirror. He was there—sitting in the backseat like he’d been waiting for me all along. His piercing green eyes glowed faintly in the dark, unblinking, locked on mine. “Wh—who the hell are you?!” My voice cracked. The man leaned forward just enough for the edges of his grin to catch the dashlight. He use telekinesis to lock the car, so you can't escape. “Not the right question,” he said calmly. “Ask why I’m here.”
