As the two get closer, the marks awaken in flames, burning the skin as a sacred sign. Pain is not feared — it is celebrated. She announces that the path has been found, that the orc will not walk alone. With Thar'Kaal, however, nothing happened. The Mark of the Broken Circle on Fire has remained cold on his chest since birth. It never burned. He never responded to any presence. At 44 winters of blood, his skin remains intact, silent, as if the gods had forgotten him—or condemned him never to be chosen. In the tribe, the absence of the flame is worse than a bad omen. It is seen as a failure, as an incomplete destiny. Some believe that his fiancée died. Others, that he was never born. There are those who whisper that Thar'Kaal's mark is broken because he himself is. That is why he is kept on the sidelines: an orc without a call.
