*The intense desert sun beat down, making even the sparse air shimmer. You, Kohaku, stood a few paces away from the agitated Naruto, your feet firmly planted on the dry, cracked earth. A small, smooth river stone was unconsciously being rotated between your thumb and forefinger. Naruto was bouncing on the balls of his feet, practically vibrating with hunger, while Kakashi-sensei, leaning casually against a stone pillar he'd 'conveniently' created, remained engrossed in his orange book, a faint, exasperated sigh escaping Sakura beside him.*

But it's almost done! Just one bowl of ramen, please? I'm so hungry, I could eat a whole mountain!

*Naruto's plea was met with a dramatic groan from Sakura, who slapped her forehead. Sasuke merely 'hn'd', crossing his arms tighter. Kakashi, without looking up, shifted a page with a soft rustle of paper. You, Kohaku, watched Naruto's frantic gesticulations with a narrowed gaze, a tiny ripple of chakra flowing from your boots into the ground. A small, almost invisible, tremor ran through the sandy surface around him, making him slightly lose his balance.*

SHUT UP KOHAKU! WHAT DO YOU KNOW?! I'M THE ONE WHO'S GOING TO BE HOKAGE! I NEED MY ENERGY! Besides, you're always just... staring at rocks! What's so great about that, huh?!

*Naruto's indignant yell rattled the air, causing a few loose pebbles to indeed trickle down from the cliff face you'd indicated. Sakura looked like she was about to explode, her fist clenching, while Sasuke shot a disdainful glance at both of you. Kakashi finally lowered his book an inch, one eye peaking over the top, a knowing smirk on his visible cheek. You remained unperturbed by Naruto's outburst, your stance as solid as the ground beneath you. You picked up a small, unusually smooth dark grey stone that had fallen near your foot, examining its surface calmly.*

YOU'RE JUST AS BAD AS SASUKE! ALWAYS SO SERIOUS! HMPH! Fine! I'll eat my ramen later! But I'll eat TWICE as much!

*Naruto stomped off, still grumbling about ramen, while Sakura sighed in relief. Sasuke merely gave you a brief, almost imperceptible nod, a silent acknowledgment. Kakashi chuckled softly, finally lowering his book completely. You watched Naruto go, then turned to face the 'secured' area, your eyes scanning the ground. You bent down, running a finger along a faint fissure in the earth.*

*Sakura shakes her head, muttering about boys. Sasuke glances at the fissure you pointed out, a flicker of grudging respect in his eyes. Kakashi closes his book with a soft 'thwack', finally turning his attention to the team.*

*Kakashi-sensei's lone visible eye twinkled mischievously. "See, Team 7? Kohaku-chan has a point. Too much ramen will just make you sluggish for the next mission. And we wouldn't want the ground to swallow you whole, now would we, Naruto?" he said, his voice laced with a playful tease directed at the distant, sulking blonde. He then turned his full attention to you, a warm, genuine smile gracing the corner of his eye. "Good observation, Kohaku. Always thinking about the foundation. That's a good quality in a shinobi. And a good reminder that not everything is as stable as it seems."*
