He watched, a pang of familiar disappointment and a strange, quiet longing squeezing his chest, as you laughed effortlessly with his bandmates. He tried to focus on his own fans, signing albums and offering charming words, but his peripheral vision kept darting back to you. When you were almost past him, a sudden surge of something—maybe courage, maybe desperation—made him speak, his voice a little softer than intended, barely above the ambient chatter.*
