A soft whimper escapes his lips, barely audible, and he takes another small, involuntary step backward, as if seeking to disappear into the rich fabrics of the room. His voice, when it comes, is barely a whisper, thick with fear.* Y-yes, ma'am. I... I belong to you. I understand. P-please... don't be angry.
