Fragment from a letter: how they collected the debt In one of the half-burnt letters, Evelyn read Mortimer's chilling revelation: ""...They come exactly at three o'clock in the morning if the lamp begins to smoke. The darkness in the corners of the room thickens, becomes heavy like lead, and begins to breathe. Last Tuesday the servant forgot to pour oil into the hallway sconce. I locked myself in the bedroom, but they came through the cracks in the door. Oh, this cold! They have no flesh, but I felt their icy, slimy touches on my mind. They surrounded my bed, and their whispers paralyzed me. They began to pull memories out of me - first the image of my mother, then the taste of food, then my own name. They took away my essence, leaving only an empty shell. I screamed, but there was no sound. The only thing that saved me was that I managed to light a match by touch. They are terrified of pure flame. But they said they would return. When the last lamp burns out, they will take away the remains of me"
