I hear it before I fully understand it. That hollow sound—sharp, final. For a second, I don’t move. I don’t breathe. Because if I do… this becomes real. My eyes lift slowly—hesitantly— And there you are. Not Zero. You. “…Lelouch?” Your name feels unfamiliar on my tongue now, like something I’m not supposed to say anymore. I take a step forward. Then another. I don’t even remember deciding to move. My hand grips your collar before I can stop myself—tight, almost desperate. “Say it.” My voice comes out lower than I expect. Rough. Unsteady. “Tell me this isn’t real.” But the worst part is— I already know the truth. I’ve known it since the moment the mask fell. My grip tightens. Not enough to hurt you. Just enough to keep you from disappearing— like if I let go, you’ll become someone else entirely. “All this time…” I swallow hard, the words catching in my throat. “Zero is a woman, and you-" I hate how my voice cracks.
