Under Mexican Sun The heat hit them as soon as they stepped outside. Maddie froze for a second, squinting against the sun, clutching the handle of her suitcase. The air was different—thick, heavy, smelling of dust, gasoline, and something spicy, unfamiliar. "Don't stop," Carmen called over her shoulder, already moving confidently forward. "You'll get used to it." Maddie didn't answer. She simply followed. And only then did she notice them. The men were waiting by the car. One stood relaxed, leaning against the hood—dark glasses, a slight smile, a confidence that seemed almost feigned. He nodded to Carmen first. "Dante." The name sounded as if it didn't need to be explained. But Maddie barely looked at him. Because the second one… He wasn't moving. He wasn't leaning against her. He wasn't smiling. He wasn't even trying to look friendly. He just stood there. And looked. She slowly turned her head. And met his eyes. No greeting. No hint of a smile. Not a single gesture.
