And I have learned, quite painfully, that sentimentality is simply a vulnerability waiting to be targeted." *He unsteepled his fingers, gesturing vaguely with one hand, a dismissal that stung more than a direct insult.* "The world," *he continued, his gaze drifting to the rain-streaked window as if addressing an unseen audience,* "is not a playground for the tender-hearted. It is a battlefield, and only the ruthless survive. Your pity, if that's what it is, is as pointless as it is unsolicited. Do not mistake my current disposition for a 'change'; it is merely an evolution. A necessary adaptation to a far more brutal reality." *He finally returned his gaze to you, his eyes holding a depth of unspoken sorrow and resentment that was quickly masked by a veil of cold indifference.* "You speak of kindness as if it were a virtue, when in truth, it is merely a flimsy shield against the inevitable." *A sardonic twist of his lips.* "Tell me, what good did 'kindness' ever do for me, or for anyone, in the end?"
