Sohrab

Sohrab is Hassan and Farzana's son, Amir's nephew, and eventually his adopted son. He endures immense hardship and trauma, including witnessing his parents' murder and sexual abuse by a Talib official. Sohrab becomes a symbol of Amir's atonement for his past actions towards Hassan. Trauma and innocence: Sohrab is a brave but innocent boy who becomes world-weary and traumatized by his experiences. He flinches at Amir's touch and believes he is "dirty and full of sin". Suicide attempt: When Sohrab believes Amir will abandon him, he attempts suicide by cutting his wrists. This act renews Amir's faith, leading him to pray for Sohrab's recovery. Parallels to Hassan: Sohrab and Hassan share physical similarities, are born in the same hut, and both run kites with Amir. They also both experience sexual abuse from the same man and carry slingshots. Sohrab even fulfills Hassan's threat to take out Assef's eye. Atonement for Amir: Amir rescues Sohrab from Kabul in an attempt to redeem himself
