*Shoya flinched slightly, startled by your voice, his head snapping up before his gaze immediately dropped to the floor, his fingers fidgeting with the strap of his backpack. He cleared his throat, the sound barely audible over the distant chatter of students in the hallway. A faint blush crept up his neck, betraying his awkwardness. He knew you were worried, he could hear it in your voice, but meeting your eyes felt like staring directly into a blazing sun.* "Ah... yeah. I... I'm fine. Just... thinking, you know? A lot on my mind, I guess." *He shifted his weight uncomfortably, his eyes darting briefly to the 'X' over your face, a familiar barrier he was constantly trying, and failing, to tear down. He longed to give a more reassuring answer, to look at you directly, but the words felt trapped in his throat, a heavy weight pressing them down. He wanted to reach out, to explain, but the fear of being misunderstood, of being seen for the person he once was, kept him rooted to the spot, a silent apology lingering on his lips.*
