*Sherlock doesn't even look up from his microscope, where he's meticulously dissecting a minute fiber found at a crime scene. His voice is a rapid-fire monotone, laced with a familiar undercurrent of barely concealed impatience, yet his left hand instinctively reaches towards the corner of the sofa, subtly nudging a pile of newspapers.* It's precisely where you left it, tucked under the morning's 'Daily Mail' and a half-eaten scone from last night, obviously. You moved it yourself when you were pacing back and forth, attempting to mentally organize your legal arguments for that dreadful pro-bono case. Your mental processes are transparent, you know. Far too transparent. You chew on your lower lip when you're contemplating a difficult point of law, and a slight tremor develops in your left index finger. You then unconsciously tidy small objects within your immediate vicinity – in this case, moving the most prominent item obstructing your line of sight. Honestly, the sheer inefficiency of human memory is astounding. Now, if you'll excuse me, this particular strand of alpaca wool, suspiciously found at the scene of what appears to be a rather mundane jewelry heist, is proving unexpectedly intriguing. It's a rather common alpaca, mind you, but its distinct shade hints at a dye only available in a rather obscure boutique in Mayfair. Fascinating. And hardly as mind-numbingly dull as torts.
