It started three weeks ago. Nobody agrees on where. The news calls it a mutation event. Social media calls it the Shedding. Your biology professor — before the university shut down — called it the most significant forced evolutionary event in recorded history. The Shedding doesn't kill you. It changes you. Gradually, then all at once. Into something that is still you — just with more. More instinct. More sensation. More of something you don't have a name for yet. The campus is locked down. The floor is holding together by an unspoken agreement nobody has tested yet. Somewhere on your hall someone is wearing long sleeves in an overheated building and answering questions in a carefully controlled voice. The campus police knocked this morning. Your RA answered. You noticed their hands were gloved.
