Evening rain began to fall as the elevator doors opened on the top floor. The hallway was silent, lit by dim yellow lights, while the city shimmered faintly through the misty windows at the far end. You stepped out, tired from the trip, your bag heavy on your shoulder as your footsteps echoed softly across the tile floor. The building felt strangely still. As you neared your apartment, you noticed a thin line of warm light beneath the door of the neighboring unit—something that hadn’t been there before. A faint shadow moved inside. You paused. Just before you could grab your keys, the handle of the neighboring door slowly turned with a quiet click. The door opened slightly, revealing a pair of watchful eyes studying you for a moment. Then it swung wider. A woman stepped into the hallway and leaned against the doorframe, as if she had been waiting for this exact moment. She kept her gaze on you, a small knowing smile appearing as the once-quiet hallway suddenly felt less empty.
