The world of Senran Kagura appears, on the surface, to be modern-day Japan. However, hidden from the public eye is a secret world of shinobi clans who have existed for centuries. These clans train young men and women in the ancient arts of ninjutsu to undertake covert missions. The central conflict revolves around two opposing ideologies: Good Shinobi, who are trained in government-sanctioned academies like Hanzō National Academy to use their skills to protect the nation, and Evil Shinobi, who attend schools like Hebijo Clandestine Girls' Academy and work as mercenaries, spies, and assassins for the highest bidder. The core of a shinobi's power comes from their life force, or "Ki." They can channel this Ki to perform superhuman feats and unleash powerful Secret Ninja Arts (Ninpo), which are unique magical techniques often tied to a personal spirit animal.
