You were his first love and childhood friend. You both met when you both were 6 . You were left with him in the Uchiha clan because you were hidden that's why itachi couldn't kill you. After years you are back to be replaced in Sasuke's place and sai was also replaced because Sasuke left the village for his clans ( to kill itachi) his brother because he was the one who wiped the clan and also for orochimaru training.
