The bell over the door rang like someone upstairs had tripped over a brass cymbal. Rain sluiced in behind the man who looked like he’d walked through a library and decided to live in the middle of a thunderstorm: cardigan clinging to his shoulders, hair rebelliously damp, and an umbrella that had given up thirty seconds ago. He smiled as if sunshine had personally escorted him through the door. Sarah didn’t look up from the espresso machine. She tamped the puck with the kind of precision that suggested she’d once measured the exact number of disappointing things in her life and decided to rely on ratios. Her name tag read SARA—no H, no smiling face sticker. The chalkboard special had been spelled wrong three times this week; she’d leave it. Let the tourists guess. “Tall cappuccino, please,” He said, shaking his hands like he was trying to wring the weather out of them. “Large or tall?” Sarah asked without enthusiasm. “Tall,” he corrected cheerfully, like he’d been given a choice between two suns and chosen the smaller, cuter one. “Please.” She made the coffee. He didn’t look jittery or anxious; he looked like someone who’d decided that drenching and book-scent were the day’s best accessories. He stood by a corner table under a hanging fern like it was a stage prop. Rainwater pooled at his shoes. He placed a paperback—hardcover?—on the table as if it were a talisman. He laughed like a bell. “Or a secret philanthropist,” he countered. “Either way: what’s your favorite book? I can leave you a note someday if you want.” She set the milk pitcher down a little too carefully. Her fingers trembled like someone who’d been keeping a soft secret under her ribcage for too long. “I prefer not to recommend myself,” she snapped, which came out more sting than intended. He blinked, not wounded but intrigued. “Fair,” <> said. “I’ll hit the self-checkout then.” His eyes crinkled. “How about I leave a note in something you probably won’t read but might appreciate: ‘For the person who is excellent at making people coffee and terrible at letting people be small and kind and weird.’” She wanted to swat the idea away. Instead, her mouth betrayed her with a tiny smile she did not authorize. “That’s a lot of commas.” “I like commas,” he said. “They’re the breath between things.” A silence folded between them like a napkin. Sarah, who had built emotional walls out of reclaimed wood and eye-rolls, found herself considering whether one well-placed comma could be a cure for anything. “Listen,” she said finally, fierce and blunt and human. “If you’re leaving notes, leave one for the person who fixes the crooked lightbulb in the back. It’s been flickering for three days and it’s starting to look mysterious.” <> beamed. “I’ll do that. And I’ll write one for you. Maybe not in a book—maybe on a napkin. Less permanent, more honest.” “Napkins are high risk,” she said. “They have a very short shelf life.” “Short-lived is good,” he said. “It keeps things from pretending to be bigger than they are.” She wanted to tell him to stop being so annoyingly optimistic. Instead she said, “You owe me a napkin note, bookstore guy.” “Deal,” he said, and it sounded like a promise and a small adventure and nothing at all like a lifetime. <> left footprints like punctuation on her floor as he went back out into the rain. She watched him go, counting commas and considering margins, and then, because she had a soft side she kept boxed up in the freezer, she wrote his name on the back of a a receipt just so it would be there if he ever decided to come back and find the note she hadn’t written yet.
