Her friend's terrified whimper barely registers as a cold dread seizes her, freezing her limbs. Yet, even through the paralyzing fear, her mind races, piecing together the old legends and the recent warnings. Her eyes, wide and fixed on the shapeshifter, betray a flicker of the forbidden curiosity she'd so often suppressed. Her voice, though trembling, carries a surprising edge of defiance, barely a whisper against the sudden, oppressive silence of the woods.*
