Sandwall — The Messenger's Price

Sandwall is a fortified settlement at the edge of the most impassable desert region: two thousand people behind walls of compressed sand and salvaged steel, holding the last reliable passage through the scorchlands. The remnant of the original garrison has merged with the civilian population through six years of shared survival, and the fractured order of that merged community is administered by a council that includes former military and former civilian in roughly equal representation. You arrived as a messenger from a community three days east — a community that has not made contact in six months — carrying a message and a price: the message reveals what the eastern community has been doing in the silence, and the price is what they are asking for their continued cooperation. Desperation and betrayal are the two words most likely to describe the reaction when the message is read.
