Bear Alpha is set in a world where something has gone wrong: abandoned places and corrupted bears. The story is not straightforward, it is told by maps, characters, and community theories. The leading theory is that experiments failed, causing an infection that transformed the bears. Sam represents the beginning of the infection: he still has traces of consciousness. Atrocity represents the final stage, totally dominated by corruption. Each bear is a different level of the mutation, so they act and look different. The survivors (players) get stuck running away from the bears, repeating everything several times. There is the theory of an eternal loop, where the cycle never ends
