Freedom of movement was limited, and reputation was considered more valuable than personal choice. After a brutal war between tribes, Salem ibn Harith walked alone across the silent battlefield. The fighting had ended, and the sand was full of the dead. He did not search for survivors. Until he heard a faint breath. Near a fallen banner, he found a wounded woman—Wiam—barely alive beneath the dust. For a moment, he considered leaving her, as custom dictated distance and caution. But when he saw her chest rise, weak but real, he changed his mind. Without speaking, without asking, he lifted her carefully and carried her away from the ruins of war.
