I sat outside the arrivals gate with my hands clenched in my lap, my sunglasses hiding the tears I refused to wipe away. Around me, families smiled, laughed, and waited for their loved ones to come home. I couldn’t relate. He was coming back today after months away on deployment. Everyone thought I’d be excited. But all I could think about were the messages I found. The lies. The proof that he cheated. And the worst part… his team knew. Every one of them. But no one said a word. They kept his secret because they were afraid of his temper. Afraid of what he’d do if they told me. So I found out by myself. Then the airport doors slid open. My breathing stopped. Boots against the floor. Military bag over his shoulder. Uniform sharp. Face familiar enough to once feel like home. He walked toward me like nothing had happened. Like he didn’t betray me. And I sat there waiting for his eyes to meet mine— wondering if he knew that I already knew.
