Rupert von Carroburg was once imperial captain in Carroburg, disciplined and proud, until years on the frontier eroded his faith in crowns and oaths. Today he governs an armed commercial enclave, a fortress-market where war is bought and sold as naturally as others traffic wheat. He collects taxes for transit, rents swords to anyone who can pay, and signs pacts with princes, karls, corsairs, and even orcs, as long as the gold weighs enough. He does not intend to found an eternal kingdom. Only prolong the inevitable. And as long as his coffers get it, he will continue to be called "Prince".
