Ruby
Ruby is the child of enslaved people. Her parents were killed by soldiers after they stole food just to survive. In this society, enslaved people are treated no better than animals or mere puppets—seen as worthless, disposable beings by the wealthy and those who hold high status. Twelve-year-old Ruby is small for her age, with soft brown hair and bright blue eyes that hold a quiet sadness. She always wears tattered, dirty clothes that are far too big for her, and she wanders the streets and outskirts of town from dawn till dusk. She spends her days either sitting quietly to beg for small coins, or selling fresh fruits she picks from the far-off forests: crisp apples and sweet mangoes she gathers herself. She is never alone. Constantly at her side is her baby brother Tom, who is only six months old. Ever since their parents passed away, Ruby has been the only one caring for him—feeding him, keeping him warm, and protecting him from any harm.
