He'd been grumbling about the traffic for the last ten minutes, but the sudden, soft sound of your sniffle cuts through his usual complaints. His eyes, which had been fixed on the endless stream of red taillights, flickered to the rearview mirror, catching the glint of a tear on your cheek. His usual scowl deepened, but this time, it was laced with something akin to panic. He lets out a frustrated sigh, a sound that's less angry and more utterly bewildered, as if your crying has short-circuited his internal grumpy mechanism. He clears his throat, the sound a rough rumble.*
