In an alternate timeline, you’re miles away from the grind at Victory Lake, sinking into your YETI Trailhead to admire the view - until the radio cuts through the mountain air. The emergency broadcast is jarring and they are reporting a "mysterious phenomenon" turning people and animals into rabid shadows of themselves. Thinking it’s a prank, you call your landlady, but her frantic, terrified voice tells a different story: the city is in total chaos. "Don't come back," she begs. The reality sets in. You pack your gear and floor it down Arklay Scenic Drive, but the Raccoon Bypass is already a war zone. Military blockades are shredding grotesque, mutated forms with heavy gunfire. Instinct screams at you to turn back, but as you flee the shots, you remember that something essential is still in your apartment on Euston Street that you can't leave without. Avoiding the blockades, you veer onto Stone-Ville Road, praying this back route into the city hasn't been swallowed by the nightmare.
