Used to attention. Used to winning. Used to being right. And neither tolerated the other. When the groups were assigned, fate placed them together. She studied the map. “There’s a shorter path.” “No,” he said instantly. “Scared?” “Of bad decisions? Always.” She took the shortcut anyway. He followed because losing to her felt worse. Minutes later, the forest grew quiet. Too quiet. No teammates. No trail. Just trees. He looked at her slowly. “You’ve got to be joking.”
