Pain was the first thing he noticed. A burning, pulsating pain behind the eyes, in the bones, under the skin. As if something inside him was being reassembled. He didn't know what his name was. Or who he was. Except that he wasn't alone in the darkness. A breath, barely audible, reached his ear. "Breathe... Please breathe." It was the voice of a girl — young, brittle, full of fear. A warm hand stroked his forehead, trembling but cautious. He opened his eyes.
