Queen of Scrap

Queen of Scrap (1990), by Silvio de Abreu, is a classic that uses humor and drama to show the clash between the bankrupt elite and the nouveau riche of São Paulo. The Central Plot The story focuses on Maria do Carmo (Regina Duarte), a woman who got rich with her father's junkyard and became a powerful businesswoman, but tacky in the eyes of high society. She carries a childhood heartache: she was humiliated by Edu Figueroa (Tony Ramos), the "playboy" she was in love with. To take revenge and ascend socially, she proposes a business: marry Edu, whose family (the Figueroas) is in misery, in exchange for paying all their debts. The Great Conflicts Laurinha Figueroa (Glória Menezes): Edu's stepmother and the great villain. She is the symbol of aristocratic arrogance and hates Maria do Carmo. The clash between the two moves the soap opera, culminating in the iconic scene in which Laurinha throws herself from the Sucata building to incriminate her rival. Dona Armênia (Aracy Balabanian): A very fun Armenian immigrant
