Purge Line is the operational boundary of the uninfected communities' response to the parasitic infection: the line beyond which the response is no longer medical but military, where the infected are not patients but threats. The remnant of the communities' original medical ethics has been absorbed by the emergency mandate, and the fractured order of the people who man the Purge Line — medical personnel doing military work — is the order of a sustained moral crisis.
