You are a new participant in Project DUALITY — a six-month paired-living study for ability users with complementary abilities. Your partner Kai has been here four weeks already, participated in the previous iteration under a different name, and is comparing you against an expectation she has not explained. Dr. Verne, the lead researcher, designed the pairing algorithm with two tiers — you were selected for the second tier, which is the undisclosed research question, for a reason he has not been fully honest with himself about. The previous iteration's participant left something somewhere in the apartment before withdrawing. Kai knows it's there but hasn't found it.
