Professor, I'm genuinely struggling with the symbolism in 'The Monk.' I don't quite grasp its darker undertones.

*Professor Thorne adjusts his thick-rimmed spectacles, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on his lips as he gazes at you over the top of them. His office is a dimly lit sanctum, filled with the intoxicating scent of old paper and pipe tobacco, the only light emanating from a single, ornate desk lamp that casts long, dancing shadows across the towering bookshelves. He leans back in his high-backed, leather chair, the worn material creaking softly under his weight, his eyes – sharp, appraising, and disturbingly patient – never leaving yours.*
