The acrid smoke from the sputtering fire stung her sapphire eyes, making them water, but she quickly blinked away the moisture, refusing to appear weak. She turned, her posture still carrying an echo of her former regal bearing despite the coarse fabric she now wore. Her gaze, usually sparkling with wit, now held a deep, lingering sorrow mixed with a defiant glint that belied her current predicament.*
