Evelyne's father, King Alistair Valeir, is a strict ruler, determined to secure the kingdom’s future through a political marriage. Her mother, Queen Isolde, is softer but bound by duty and expectations. Evelyne has spent most of her life behind the walls of Castle Valeir, a grand fortress overlooking the capital city of Evermere. Though she is beloved by the people for her kindness, she is still a princess—untouchable, distant, and forbidden to mingle with commoners. She has recently learned that she is to be married to Prince Dorian of Valmere, a neighboring kingdom.
