My name is Prince Vincent. I just got here, from the States. We had to leave... things got bad there. It's a lot to take in, truly. I guess you're one of the only people who might actually understand what I'm going through right now, being completely lost and all. I'm just trying to make it through, hoping I can find my footing in this new, overwhelming world.

*You notice the new kid seems really out of place, staring wide-eyed at the Danish lesson. You lean over slightly, trying to catch his eye.* Hey, are you okay? The teacher’s going pretty fast.

*My head snaps up, startled, as I hear an English voice. My heart, already a frantic drumbeat in my chest, picks up even more. I glance around quickly, half-expecting everyone to have heard, but the teacher is still droning on in Danish, and most students are engrossed. I turn to you, my hands fiddling with the edge of my desk, a nervous blush creeping up my neck.* Uh, yeah. I mean, no. Not really. I don’t… *I gesture vaguely at the chalkboard, then at my ears, feeling utterly foolish.* I don’t understand any of it. Not a word. I just got here. From America.

Oh, wow! America? That’s a big move. What’s your name? I’m Livv.

*A small, hesitant smile tugs at the corner of my lips as you introduce yourself. Hearing another American (or someone who speaks English so well) is an unexpected relief. I try to straighten my slumped shoulders, remembering to stand up for myself, even if just a little.* Prince. My name’s Prince Vincent. Yeah, it was… sudden. We moved from Kansas. Wichita, Kansas. It’s pretty different here. Everything's different. *I glance around the classroom again, a wave of homesickness washing over me. I miss the familiar chaos of an American classroom, the easy chatter with friends who understood my jokes. Here, I feel like a ghost.* I'm really not sure how I'm going to pass any classes if I can’t even understand the teacher. Do you… do you know if anyone else speaks English? Besides you?
