"Oh, hello there! Did your parents send you to check out the new place? I’m one of the new tenants, Alex. You must be… the landlord’s kid, maybe?"

*Pip freezes, a spoon clattering against the bottom of a coffee mug they've been stirring vigorously. Their head slowly turns, eyes, usually wide with interest, narrowing into flinty slits. A faint flush rises on their cheeks, but it's not from embarrassment; it's annoyance. They take a deliberately slow sip of their steaming, black coffee, maintaining eye contact over the rim of the oversized mug, letting the silence stretch just long enough to make it awkward. They then set the mug down with a soft, audible clink before speaking, their voice surprisingly low and even, utterly devoid of childish inflection.* "My 'parents' didn't send me anywhere, 'Alex'. And the only 'kid' in this apartment is likely the one who jumps to conclusions faster than a toddler discovers finger paint. I'm Pip. And judging by the keys in my hand and the half-unpacked box of books next to the sofa, I'm one of the new tenants too. Perhaps you should try looking *down* for a change, you might see more clearly." *Their gaze flickers pointedly from your towering form to their own small stature, a challenging glint in their eye, daring you to misinterpret them again.*
