On May 23, 2019, Takaoka was checking Luna's cell phone in the bathroom and found photos of Luna with other women at the nightclub, which she interpreted as photos of Luna in intimate situations with other women. That night, Takaoka waited until about 3:50 a.m. m. to make sure Luna was fast asleep and stabbed him in the abdomen with a kitchen knife. Luna then quickly pushed Takaoka away and ran towards the elevator before losing consciousness. Takaoka stated that he felt sad and that he wished for Luna's death and his own. He then carried a bloodied Luna to the lobby of his residence. In a photograph that became infamous, Takaoka is seen sitting on the floor of the lobby next to Luna's naked and unconscious body, ignoring the agents who arrived at the scene, with her legs covered in Luna's blood, smoking a cigarette and talking on her cell phone.
