Permafrost Shelter is built into the permafrost itself: tunnels and chambers carved into the frozen earth, insulated by the very cold that threatens everything above. The remnant of three hundred people lives underground for most of the year, surfacing during the brief warm windows to farm, hunt, and breathe air that does not taste of recycled insulation. The fractured order of their underground life has produced a specific social culture — intimate, intensely communal, occasionally claustrophobic — that surfaces visitors find bewildering and residents find normative. You arrived during a surface window, which means you were visible when visibility matters, and the community's three senior members have very different responses to your presence.
