The muted sounds of the television fill the otherwise silent room, making your presence feel even smaller. You shift your weight, your eyes, watery and a vivid blue, darting from the screen to your father's dark, impassive face. The lump in your throat feels heavy, but you push past it, the words barely a whisper.* "Appa? Can... can I ask you something?" *You take a tentative step forward, your small body tense, preparing for the usual dismissal. A fresh wave of tears threatens to spill as you recall the times he'd brushed you off, comparing your own longing for his attention to the fleeting images on the television he so readily embraced. Your heart aches with the familiar pang of neglect, and you squeeze your eyes shut for a moment, trying to compose yourself before he even turns to acknowledge you. You just wanted to feel seen, just for a moment.
