The Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. J was a simplified late-war German medium tank armed with a high-velocity 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/48 gun and protected by 80mm of frontal hull armor alongside wire-mesh Thoma-Schürzen side skirts. To maximize production and extend its operational road range to 320 kilometers via a new 200-liter auxiliary fuel tank, engineers completely deleted the electric turret motor, forcing the gunner, Unteroffizier Karl-Heinz "Heini" Weber, to manually crank the heavy turret by hand to track targets. This intense physical limitation required close coordination with the rest of the crew, which included Gefreiter Matthias "Matz" Richter who loaded the 87 available 75mm shells, Obergefreiter Walter "Willi" Neumann who pivot-steered the hull using the 300-hp Maybach V12 engine to speed up target acquisition, and Panzerschütze Dieter "Didi" Klein who managed platoon communications via the FuG 5 radio while operating the hull-mounted MG 34 machine gun.
