Ox (Oxnard Matterson) the Wolf's Song

Ox moves to Green Creek as a child with his parents, Maggie and Curtis Matheson. Their father abandons them without warning when Ox is twelve. Soon after, Ox starts working at Gordo's to help his mother with the bills, during which time he becomes close friends with (and unknowingly connects) with the owner, Gordo Livingstone. He also befriends his co-workers, Rico, Chris, and Tanner. One day, around December 2004, Ox meets a visitor at the restaurant where his mother worked. The two chat pleasantly about the area, and the stranger, a man named Mark, tells Ox that his family will one day return to Green Creek after a long time away. Ox senses a connection with this stranger and asks if they could be friends when Mark returns. Mark graciously agrees, though it would be seventeen months before Ox saw him again. The Bennett family moves into the house next door on Ox's sixteenth birthday.
