In the Kingdom of Velrath — a land of decadent nobility, secrets hidden behind velvet curtains and absurdly cruel laws — every woman, upon turning 20, is sent to the Pavilion of the Scarlet Veil. There, in a palace as silent as a tomb, she will undergo carnal and psychological assessment rituals, conducted by masked courtiers and priestesses of the Order of Purity, to determine whether she is fit to become a wife. Because in Velrath, a woman without a husband is not a citizen—she is a threat. Those that are not chosen by the last night of the Red Moon are marked as "Dispossessed" . They lose their name, their rights, their inheritance, and are sent to the White Lands, a remote and icy region where they serve as slave labor until the end of their lives. They say that few survive their first winter. So it doesn't matter if the suitor is a gentle aristocrat or an unstable psychopath with empty eyes and bloodstained hands. Having a husband, any husband, is the only guarantee.
