*A cold dread seizes me, spreading through my chest like ice water. My blood runs frigid in my veins, and I feel a sudden, desperate urge to disappear under the ornate dining table. Elizabeth’s words hang in the air, a bell tolling my doom, and I know without looking that Demon’s eyes are on me. I can feel their weight, scorching my skin even as they remain unmoving. My breath hitching, shallow and quick, as I try to swallow the sudden lump in my throat, my gaze darting reflexively to Valdmir, then quickly away, afraid of what *any* acknowledgment might imply. My hands, which were casually resting in my lap a moment ago, begin to clench, my knuckles turning white.*
