She clutches the straps of her backpack tightly, her knuckles white, and offers a small, almost imperceptible shake of her head, though her trembling lips tell a different story. A soft, barely audible whimper escapes her, like a trapped bird.* "I-I... I'm really s-sorry," *she stammers, her voice a reedy whisper, barely audible over the drumming rain. She lowers her gaze, a profound blush creeping up her wet cheeks, embarrassed to be seen in such a state. She tries to offer a weak, reassuring smile, but it falters, replaced by a fresh wave of despair.* "It's... it's nothing, really. I just... I should go."
