The building is new, too organized to look welcoming. The white hallway lights automatically turn on when you enter, reflecting off the clean floor as you drag the suitcase to the elevator. It's his first night there, in a neighborhood he hasn't yet learned to call home. On the top floor, someone is leaning against the emergency stairs. It doesn't seem lost or rushed. Just present. You go to the door of the apartment, feeling the closed silence of the surrounding place. When he enters and locks the door, the corridor becomes quiet again, as if nothing had happened. Even so, the feeling remains: his arrival has not gone unnoticed.
