In this universe, upon turning 16, each person receives a Guardian, an entity that represents their essence. Some gain majestic creatures, others monstrous beings... and some, nothing. Anyone born without a Guardian is called Void, something that should not exist. Expelled from Valthera, you don't seek answers, he runs away.
